Rony’s nomination declared legal
The Election Commission has ruled legal the candidacy of Golam Maula Rony from Patuakhali-3 to contest in the upcoming general election slated for December 30.
The decision was taken on Thursday, the first day of appeal hearings for nominees who had their applications rejected.
The hearing began at 10am on the eleventh floor of the EC’s headquarters in Agargaon in Dhaka with Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and election commissioners Mahbub Talukdar, Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury in the temporary board formed to consider the reviews.
Patuakhali returning officer cancelled Rony’s nomination paper due to ‘no signature on the affidavit’.
Rony had been elected as an Awami League candidate in 2008. He joined the BNP ahead of the 11th
parliamentary election and secured the BNP’s nomination to fight for Patuakhali 3 with the party’s paddy sheaf symbol.
He also fought the 2014 election as an independent candidate after failing to get the Awami League’s ticket.
Of the 534 appeal petitions, a total of 160 were settled on the first day while 150 petitions will be heard on Friday and the rest of 233 on Saturday.
The Election Commission has cancelled 786 nominations during its scrutiny process.
The last date for withdrawing candidacy is December 9 while December 10 is set for allocating electoral symbol.
