Plan to hold 5 city elections centering Ramadan
The Election Commission (EC) has taken plan to hold five City Corporation elections in the country centering the month of Ramadan.
According to EC sources, the HSC examinations will conclude on May 4. After this election may take place in two City Corporations. As the month of Ramadan is scheduled to begin from May 17, the election of Gazipur and Sylhet City Corporation will take place before the date. And later the elections of Rajshahi, Barisal and Khulna City Corporations will be held after celebrating Eid, in July.
Of the five City Corporations the tenure of Gazipur will complete on September 4, Sylhet on September 8, Khulna on September 25, Rajshahi on October 5 and Barisal on October 23.
According to Local Government (City Corporation) act voting can take place at any time before 180 days of completion of five years tenure of City Corporations. So EC is taking preparations to hold election.
As part of the preparation the EC Joint Secretary Farhad Ahmed Khan sent a letter to Local Government Division Secretary on Thursday. In the letter requests were made to deliver opinions on different issues like border settlement, ward dividing, taking court order for granted and other updated related matters of Gazipur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet City Corporations.
The election of Dhaka City Corporation is halted due to boundary complexities. This type of complexities also prevails in Gazipur City Corporation. So EC does not want to take any risk for holding election in these five City Corporations.
Earlier, elections in five City Corporations were held six months before the 10th
national parliament election, in June-July of 2013. The candidates of Awami League were defeated by BNP candidates in all five city elections.
