2 to die, 3 get life term for killing RU teacher

A court has awarded death sentence for two accused and life term imprisonment for three in connection with Rajshahi University (RU) teacher Dr. AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiqui murder case.

Judge of Rajshahi speedy trial tribunal Shirin Kabita Akhtar delivered the verdict of much featured murder case at around 2:15 pm on Tuesday.

In the verdict she delivered death sentence for Shariful Islam, a student of RU English department and Maskawat Hasan alias Abdullah alias Sakib of Shibganj area under Bogura. The life term imprisonment awarded convicts are Rahmat Ullah from Miapara of Nilphamari, Abdus Sattar from Narikel Baria area of Rajshahi metropolitan area and his son Ripon Ali.

The judgment came through following charge sheet filed against five accused. Four were produced before the court during declaring verdict.

But the muster mind of the murder Shariful Islam is still absconding. There were 32 witnesses of the case and the court took deposition of 26.

On April 23, 2016 Rajshahi University English department Professor Dr. AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiqui was hacked to death in front of his own house at Shalbagan area in Rajshahi city.

On November 6, 2017 the Investigation Officer filed charge sheet in the court accusing eight in connection with the killing. Of the accused Khairul Islam Badhon, Nazrul Islam alias Bike Hasan and Tarek Hasan alias Osman were killed earlier in ‘gunfight’ with the law enforcing agency.
