Custom Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized 275 mobile phones worth 2 crore 20 lakh taka from different show rooms of capital’s Uttara, Mohakhali and Basundhara city through conducting drives. Of those 133 iphones, 125 HTC, 15 LG, one apple watch and one ipad. 9 people were also detained in connection with making forged iphones.

Seven were detained from TJ Group show room at Mohakhali and two were from Talukder Mobile Link of Uttara North Tower.

Director General of CIID Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam confirmed the matter to Rtv online.

He said, there is a long term allegation of selling illegal iphones in the capital. Therefore the operation was conducted. These iphones were brought illegally not buying from the importers. So they are evading tax. The items we have seized have no valid documents.

Meanwhile, while conducting the drive custom intelligence Additional Director General Ziauddin and other officials had to face the angry businessmen and employees when they were coming out from Basundhara city market in the capital. The agitating businessmen seized the road in front of the market. Huge traffic congestion created at the moment. Later the businessmen held meeting with the custom officials to get return of the mobile phone sets.

At that time mobile phone sets business association leader Borhan Uddin said, the custom intelligence department snatched away the mobile sets without any prior notice. They could not show any documents of conducting mobile court. The businessmen have the documents of buying which they obtained from the people who brought the items from abroad. But they did not buy those from importers.

ADG Ziauddin said, the drive was conducted maintaining the legal process. The shop owners could not show any valid documents, so the phone sets were seized. Those will be returned to them if they can show valid documents.

DG of CIID Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam said, legal action will be taken under zero tolerance who smuggle mobile phones and associated with forged mobile phone marketing. Because, government is losing huge amount of revenue for the illegal activities. This type of drive will go on as a regular basis.

High officials of CIID including its ADG, Deputy Director, and Additional Director took part in the drive and members of RAB, Police and Ansar associated them.
