Hill slides kill 10 including 4 of a family in Rangamati
At least 10 people were killed including mother and son in hill slides following continuous rain fall at Naniarchar upazila in Rangamati. The incidents took place in three areas of Naniarchar upazila from Monday midnight to early hours of Tuesday.
Naniarchar upazila chairman Quality Chakma said, hill slides killed four of a family at Dharmacharan Karbaripara under Burighat union, four at Barakulpara under Sabekkhong union and two at Hatimara under Ghilachhari union.
Of the deceased eight were identified. They are-Smriti Chakma (23) and her son Ayub Dewan (one and half month), Eti Dewan (19) and Fuljibi Chakma (55) of Dharmacharan Karbaripara; Surendra Lal Chakma (55), his wife Rajjo Devi Chakma (50), daughter Sonali Chakma (13) and Romen Chakma (14) of Barakulpara. But the deceased of Hatimara were yet to be identified.
Locals said, at around 12 am on Monday a family at Karbaripara were victimized of hill slide. Four died in the incident. The other incidents took place at the early part of the morning.
Office in Charge of Naniarchar police station Abdul Latif said, the hill slide incidents took place in three areas of the upazila. Police officials were sent on the spot. Details cannot be said in this regard. Rain hampered the rescue work.
Deputy Commissioner of Rangamati AKM Mamunur Rashid said, we are informed about the incident. Rescue operation is going on. But the number of causalities cannot be confirmed at the moment.
Weather Observation Center of Rangamati said, 254 millimeters rainfall was recorded in the district from Monday 6 am to Tuesday 6 am.
Meanwhile, 120 people were killed in hill slides in different parts of Rangamati district following heavy rainfall on June 13 last year.
