Flood worsens in Moulvibazar, water at 4 granaries
Different areas of Moulvibazar town have begun to submerge following the Monu river erosion at Boraitoli point. There is also fear of stock food wastage as flood water has entered four government granaries.
Five low lying unions have gone under water freshly. Road communication between Sylhet and four upazilas was snapped. Deputy Commissioner has said that adequate relief items are available to face the calamity. In addition higher authority was informed for more relief allocation.
While visiting, it was observed that flood situation deteriorated in Moulvibazar. The Monu river is flowing 154 centimeters above of the danger mark at Chandnighat point. Efforts were going on for the last two days to save the town protection embankment by putting sand sacks but it went in vain. Following collapse of the embankment at Baroikona area flood water submerged three wards of the municipal area on Saturday night. Flood water entered into two hundred shops and huge number of homes. Many left their homes and took shelter in safer places.
Meanwhile, 25 unions were inundated in the last couple of days as the protection embankment collapsed in different parts over the rivers Monu and Dholai. Nearly 7 thousand people have taken shelter at 44 shelter centers. Vast crop lands were inundated. Village roads were submerged. Three lakh people have become marooned.
Earlier the Eid vacation of different government offices including district administration and Water Development Board was cancelled. Army is associating with the local representatives to rescue marooned people from the affected areas.
Moulvibazar Deputy Commissioner Md. Tofael Islam said, 125 metric tons of rice, 5 thousand packets dry food and 1 lakh 50 thousand taka cash were allocated for the affected areas. The concerned authorities were also informed about to allocate more relief items.
