2017 the year of Bank scams: CPD
Honorary fellow of nongovernment research organization Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr. Debapriya Bhattachariya has said that the year 2017 will be identified as the year of bank scams.
He said, we cannot see any symptom that the destabilized situation which is prevailing in the banking sector at present will be removed in the year 2018.
He said these at a press conference on the first interim review of economy of Bangladesh for 2018-19 fiscal year under the title Independent Review for the Development of Bangladesh at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Saturday.
Dr. Debapriya Bhattachariya said, the year 2017 will be identified as a year of bank scams. Overall the economic stability was under pressure in 2017. We cannot see any sign for overcoming the destabilized situation in the year 2018.
He said, ownership has changed through administrative decisions in different banks under private sector. The new private banks that are allowed under political consideration failed to be active. We have experienced that incident of money laundering was happened through private bank. It is noticed in the banking sector that the government is not interested for reformation process.
Debapriya said, we have seen rather the government provided opportunity for appointing four directors instead of two from the same family in private sector bank. Thus the banks are getting family oriented.
Research Fellow Taufiqul Islam Khan presented the key note papers in the press conference.
It is said in the key note papers that import expense has increased but export income has not increased as that rate. So there is a deficit of payment of balance. Inflation has increased. Though the interest rate decreased overall but the small entrepreneurs could not get the opportunity. Default loans increased. Government is providing huge amount of fund as capital from the people’s taxpaying money. Now money is being laundered to foreign countries through private bank.
Special Fellow of CPD Dr. Mostafizur Rahman, Research Director Khondoker Golam Moazzem and others were present on the occasion.
