President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday greeted the countrymen and all Muslims across the world on the advent of the holy month of Ramadan.

In separate messages on the eve of the fasting month, they prayed for the welfare of the country and the Muslim Ummah.

President Abdul Hamid, in his message, said the holy month of Ramadan is the month of self-restraint, self-rectification and obtaining forgiveness.

It brings a unique opportunity of getting closer to Allah and attaining peace and forgiveness, he added.

"As Ramadan is the month of Rahmat (mercy), Barkat (blessing), Maghfirat (forgiveness) and Najat (salvation), it brings a unique opportunity of getting closer to Allah, attaining peace and forbearance," the President added.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Ramadan is the month of self-restraint, compassion and forgiveness.

This month is for purification of souls through sacrifices and it creates the scopes for getting closer to Allah, she added.

She called upon all to be inspired with the teachings of the holy month of Ramadan and establish peace, amity and fraternity in personal and social lives, shunning luxury, malice, violence and conflicts.

"Let us help each other to establish peace by shunning all ills," she said and called for maintaining sanctity of the Ramadan by exhibiting the sense of proportion, patience and restraint in all spheres.
