4 to die for rape and murder of Rupa

The court awarded death sentence to four and seven years imprisonment to one in the sensational Rupa rape and murder case. Zakia Sultana Rupa, a college student was gang raped and murdered on a moving bus at Madhupur in Tangail.

Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge and Additional District and Session Judge Abul Hossain Miah delivered the verdict in Tangail on Monday.

The death penalty awarded convicts are- bus driver Habibur (45), helpers Shamim (26), Akram (35) and Jahangir (19).

Besides, supervisor Safar Ali (55) was awarded seven years imprisonment and fined one lakh taka also. The court also ordered to change the ownership of the bus on which Rupa was murdered and to deliver it to the family of Rupa.

On February 5, Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge and Additional District and Session Judge Abul Hossain Miah fixed the date for verdict after placement of legal arguments of lawyers of the defendants and state.

The judicial activities began on January 3 through recording depositions of witnesses. Later the court concluded the recording of list of the seized items, on spot investigation report and cross examination of the physician, four judicial magistrates who took statement of five accused according to section 164 and the Investigation Officer. The recording concluded on January 23.

On August 25, the transport workers gang raped Rupa on a moving bus when she was going Mymensingh from Bogra. After killing her on the bus the perpetrators left the body in a forest at Pachishmail area in Madhupur upazila. Police recovered the body on that night after getting informed by the locals. Following post-mortem, she was buried at the Tangail town central graveyard as unclaimed body.

Police filed a murder case in this connection at Madhupur police station. Brother of Rupa, Hafizur Rahman identified the body based on photograph.

Later police arrested the five accused in connection with the incident. They all were the transport workers of Chhoa Paribahan in Bogra-Mymensingh route.
