PM herself handling quota issue: Planning Minister

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself is handling the matter of quota reformation.

He said this at an immediate press conference at his office at Sher e Banglanagar in the capital on Monday.

The minister said, the Prime Minister in the regular cabinet meeting said that nobody needs to think about the matter of quota. She said that she would look into the matter.

He said, the Prime Minister will solve the matter very soon. She will find out a permanent solution. So she is thinking and taking time. She will deliver a correct and acceptable solution in this connection.

The Planning Minister said, the non students who are associated with quota reform movement will be under trial. The reason of the movement is being investigated.

Besides, after the regular cabinet meeting Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said, decision for quota in government job will come very soon.

After Prime Minister’s declaration of quota abolition the agitating students gave time till May 7 for publishing gazette. They came to the streets again as gazette was not published in the given time. Later, they demanded for publishing the gazette before 5 pm on Sunday.

As the gazette was not published the central branch of Bangladesh General Students Rights Protection Council called for indefinite class and examinations boycott from Monday.

According to their earlier declaration the students began a procession from in front of Dhaka University central library on Monday morning. After marching several points of the campus the procession ended at the Shahbag intersection. Then the blocked the area.

To press the same demand students of Jahangir Nagar University, Jagannath University and other universities of the country including Rajshahi, Chattogram, Cumilla, Khulna, Barishal, Noakhali boycotted the classes and examinations.

On Monday evening the council of student in a press briefing called off their road blockade. Council Convener Hasan Al Mamun said, Prime Minister has assured that gazette cancelling the quota will be published very soon. We are suspending our program for today keeping confidence and belief on her speech.

But class and examinations boycott as part of the peaceful program will continue, he added.
