Additional Secretary of Election Commission Mokhlesur Rahman said, the fire has burnt nearly one thousand Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) at the Election Commission (EC) Bhaban last night.
After visiting the fire affected section of the building on the ground floor last night, he delivered the information to the newsmen on Monday noon.
Mokhlesur Rahman said, primarily it is thought that the fire can originate from electric short circuit. But it will not affect the by-election of Rangpur.
Meanwhile, NID Director General Brigadier General Saidul Islam said that no damage was done to the server of National Identity Card.
The fire originated on the ground floor of EC Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital at around 11 pm on Sunday. Ten units of Fire Service took the fire under control at around 12:30 am. But the cause of the fire is yet to be known.
According to the EC, there are reception, media center and security officer’s office on the ground floor. Besides there are godown for keeping EVMs and garage on the basement.
