Seven people were killed in a gas pipeline explosion in the ground floor of a building at Patharghata area in Chattogram. Of the deceased two were identified.
The incident of explosion occurred at around 9 am on Sunday. The injured were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
ASI Alauddin Shikder from CMCH police post said, of the deceased four are male, two are female and one is a child. Total seven dead bodies were brought in the hospital and 10 were undergoing treatment.
Two dead bodies were identified. They are- Anni Barua (40), head mistress of Patia Government Primary School and Nurul Islam (31), a carpenter.
Officer in Charge of Kotwali police station Md. Mohsin said, the accident occurred due to the riser explosion of gas pipeline of the building.
Purna Chandra Muthsuddi, Agrabad Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director said, the incident of riser explosion in the gas pipeline took place around at 9 am at ‘Kunjamoni Bhaban’ on Brickfield Road at Patharghata. After the explosion two front walls of the building collapsed.
Locals said, gas pipeline repair work was going on from Saturday night which was taken under the building. The explosion occurred on Sunday morning while the repair work was going on. At that time fire engulfed the nearby area and two walls of the building collapsed.
By this time a team led by Chief Planner Shahinul Islam Khan of Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) visited the explosion hit area. He said, here the buildings were not constructed abiding by the law. Explosion sometimes may occur from the gas reserved in the septic tank. The matters are being investigated.
