Case filed against Dr. Yunus for not following labor act

A case has been lodged against Nobel Laureate Professor and Grameen Communications Chairman Dr. Muhammad Yunus for not following the labor act.

On January 5, Labor Inspector (General) Tariqul Islam of factory and establishment inspection directorate filed the criminal case before the third Dhaka labor court of Judge Rahibul Islam. In the case Grameen Communications Managing Director Naznin Sultana, Director A. Hye Khan and Deputy General Manager Gauri Shankar were also made defendant.

Bench Clark of the court Mia Md. Jamal Uddin confirmed the information on Thursday. The court will deliver order regarding the case on January 12.

According to the allegation of the case, the plaintiff of the case found violation of 10 rules while inspecting the office of Grameen Communications on October 10, 2019.

Of the violations the mentionable are- no appointment letter, identity card attached with photograph and service book were given to the workers or employees, notice of the work period was not authorized by the Inspector, the company did not submit yearly and half yearly return, the rules of appointment is not authorized by the Chief Inspector, no register was preserved for weekly or festival leave for the workers, five percent profit of the company is not distributed in the participatory fund of the workers, no safety committee was formed and others.

Earlier arrest warrant was issued against Dr. Muhammad Yunus by the court on October 9 following filling three separate cases by three sacked workers of Grameen Communications who formed trade union. Dr. Yunus was granted bail as he surrendered before the Dhaka third labor court acting Chairman Zakia Parvin on November 3.
