The total number of vote centers in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election is 425. Of those, unofficial results of 247 centers have been received so far.

In the election, Awami League mayor candidate Jahangir Alam is leading with bagging 2 lakh 64 thousand 547 votes for the symbol of ‘boat’. His nearest competitor BNP candidate Hasan Uddin Sarkar with symbol of ‘sheaf of paddy’ bagged 1 lakh 18 thousand 705 votes.

Vote casting in Gazipur City Corporation election ended without any major unwanted incident. Vote counting began after voting ended at 4 pm on Tuesday.

But vote casting was suspended in nine centers following incidents of irregularities, said Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helaluddin Ahmad.

Returning Officer Rokib Uddin Modol told newsmen that they have suspended vote casting in nine centers out of 425 centers.

The centers are: MEH Arif College under ward number 9, Vogra Government Primary School under ward 15, Bindan Government Primary School under ward 42, Jahan Public Dattapara Center under ward 48, two centers at Khortail Mansur Ali Adarsha School under ward 51 and Auchpara Hazi Kashim Uddin BM and Commerce College Center under ward number 54.

During the period of election BNP alleged that their agents were forced out from more than two hundred vote centers. On the other hand, Awami League commented that it is BNP’s traditional habit.
