A court in Dhaka on Sunday placed Abdur Rahman Saikat, who was detained on Saturday night over the mysterious death of Stamford University student Rubaiyat Sharmin Rumpa, on a 4-day remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mamunur Rashid passed the order when Investigation Officer of the case and also Inspector of Detective Branch of police Shah Md Akteruzzaman produced him before the court seeking a seven-day remand for interrogation.

The court also rejected a bail petition filed by Saikat’s lawyer.

On Saturday, detectives detained Saikat for interrogation over the death of Rumpa, who was found dead in an alley under mysterious circumstances.

Later, Saikat was shown arrested.

The body of Rumpa, 22, a second-year English student of Siddheswari branch of the private university, was recovered from an alley of the area on Wednesday night.

Police sent her body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue as an unidentified one. Later, her family members identified the body on Thursday evening.

On Thursday morning, police filed a murder case with Ramna Police Station in this connection.

Claiming that Rumpa, daughter of police Inspector Rokan Uddin, was murdered, her family members and fellows demanded arrest of the perpetrators.
