Smart phones to be costlier

Smart phones are going to be costlier. In his budget proposal Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Thursday proposed for increasing smart phone import duty from 10 per cent to 25 per cent. But duty on feature and other type of phones will be previous 10 per cent.

The Finance Minister delivered the information while presenting the budget for 2019-20 fiscal year in the Jatiya Sangsad.

In his budget speech he said, cellular phone is one of the important part of ICT sector. By this time some local producers have begun to produce and assemble cellular phones in Bangladesh. At present 10 per cent duty is applicable for importing smart phone and feature phone.

The Finance Minister said, as rich people use smart phones, so I propose to impose 25 percent import duty on smart phones. But duty on feature phones will be unchanged because low income people use that.
