Production cost of beef can be 350 taka per kilogram if different facilities like duty free import and timely shipment of fodders are ensured. But if the decision of importing meat is given after not doing those than that will be self-destructive. Imran Hossain, president of Bangladesh Dairy Farmers Association (BDFA) said these.
He said these at a farm owners’ conference at Mohammadpur in the capital on Saturday. Nearly one thousand farm owners joined the conference.
Imran Hossain said, price of meat is higher in Bangladesh than the international market. As prices of fodders are high due to syndicate so the prices of meat are also high. But surveillance should be increased so that nobody can form syndicate. Price of beef can be fixed at taka 350 per kg if subsidies are given to distribute fodders, measures are taken for duty free fodders import and timely shipment of fodders in the ports.
He said, the decision will be self destructive if condition of meat import is given against export of readymade garments items from the country. At present the country is self sufficient in meat production.
Imran Hossain said, everyday new farms are being set up. Specially youths are doing farm business by not going after jobs. The demand of sacrificial animals is being met by local cattle at the moment. In this situation if meat import is encouraged than farms of the country will be destroyed.
